Shenley Re-development
The process at Shenley involved reclaiming the materials from demolished buildings.  The materials were re-graded and stockpiled ready for re-use within the new project.

The approximate quantity of reusable material was over 1,500 cubic metres, which was used in the formation of roads, foundations and drainage.

This resulted in a cost saving to the project – no disposal, transportation or purchase of new hardcore.

Also there were substantial environmental benefits gained from reduced lorry movements.

RESIDENTS OF SHENLEY GET AWARD WINNING HOMES

Residents of Shenley will be celebrating with landlords, Bournville Village Trust when they tot up their fuel bills at the end of the winter months. The developer of the £4 million Phase 1 development in South Birmingham has won a national environmental award for energy saving achievements in the building and construction of new homes at Shenley Green.

Out of one thousand entries from across the UK, Bournville Village Trust won the silver Green Apple award, which was presented by actress Janie Dee at the House of Commons.  The sustainable homes in Shenley Green include twelve bungalows, a new medical centre, refurbished shops and new landscaping and park.

Now in its tenth year, the Green Apple Awards are established as one of the top environmental award schemes in the UK, supported by the Environment Agency, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management, the Municipal Journal and numerous other official bodies.

National Organiser, Roger Wolens commented: "The number of entries has almost doubled this year, so the winners are to be congratulated more than ever." 

Accepting the award, on behalf of Bournville Village Trust, Chief Executive Peter Roach said: "We have an admirable track record of energy efficiency systems in our new homes and are determined to continue to innovate."
